Herbal Ideas for Hyperactive Children

Children around the world seem to be getting diagnosed more and more with hyperactivity and impulsivity. It’s estimated that 6.4 million children have been diagnosed with ADHD in the U.S. With that diagnosis, often comes medication, but is there perhaps a natural option you can try first?

Some of the symptoms of ADHD and anxiety can be also seen in perfectly healthy children. Issues like acting out, Difficulty focusing, aggression, withdrawn attitude or academic struggles can be attributed to changes in the environment, diet or even lifestyle changes (like changing schools or a divorce in the family).

While parents should always, always, always consult their pediatrician when these and other symptoms arise, they can also help manage these with lifestyle changes like exercise, better eating habits, sufficient sleep, or even less screen time.

In addition, there are also safe and effective natural options to help with hyperactivity. It’s important to note, before giving any herbs or supplements to your child, be sure to discuss potential risks and benefits with your child’s doctor.

Here are the herbal ideas to consider:

1. Magnesium

Magnesium is incredibly important to overall health. It regulates sleep and can improve overall mood, it’s no wonder many ADHD children are found to be deficient in this mineral. Low levels of magnesium can cause irritability, short attention spans, and confusion. A magnesium supplement or a magnesium rich diet can be helpful for hyperactive children.

2. Ginkgo Biloba

This herb is known for it’s memory boosting capabilities and improving the ability to focus. Ginkgo biloba can also lower anxiety and help with depression. Children with hyperactivity or ADHD might find taking gingko biloba helps clear “brain fog” and focus on projects or school work more easily.

3. Ginseng

Another herb you’ve probably heard of is ginseng. It increases memory, concentration, and alertness, all of which can help someone diagnosed with ADHD. Gingsenosides are the key active ingredient that make ginseng such a beneficial natural remedy.

4. Gotu Kola

Also know as penny wort, this herb helps with depression while improving memory. It’s also helpful for alleviating the restlessness that’s common in ADHD and hyperactive kids. Gotu Kola can help combat short attention spans, anxiety, and depression as well.

5. Chamomile

Another herbal remedy commonly taken in tea form is chamomile. It’s a natural relaxant and is a gentle option. It can also aid in better sleep if taken before bed.

6. Valerian Root

This can be used as an effective sedative or sleep aid, but is not habit forming. Children need upwards of ten hours of sleep each night, and adequate sleep is helpful in lessoning the symptoms of ADHD. Valerian root has been used to treat insomnia and genuinely leads to better quality sleep. You can find this root in a powder form or as a tea.

7. Catnip

Although catnip may cause you pet to behave widely, it’s another relaxant and sleep aid when it comes to hyperactivity. It’s safe for children and can lesson anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia. Steep catnip in a tea alone or combine it with chamomile and lime blossom for a relaxing blend.

8. Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is both antiviral and antibacterial. Just like the herbs mentioned above, it can be used to calm nerves. This can help to lessen fidgeting and other symptoms of hyperactivity or impulsivity.

9. Avena (wild oats)

Oats have a number of uses, and treating hyperactivity is one of them. Hyperactivity is a form of stress, and avena sativa can help to reduce stress and anxiety, lessoning behavioral symptoms of AHDS or hyperactivity.

Improve Menstrual Cramps

Each month, the lining of a woman’s uterus produces chemicals called prostaglandins, which help the muscles of the uterus to contract and expel tissue and fluids during menstruation.

If the levels of prostaglandins rise a lot, they cause strong contractions of the uterine muscle which are called pains, menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea.

In addition to menstrual cramps, other discomforts may occur such as:

– Pain that radiates to the lower part of the spine and to the thighs.

– Headache

– Vomiting

– Cramps

– Fatigue, etc.

Herbs and blends to fight pain or menstrual cramps

Remedy for menstrual colic #1: Boil, for 10 minutes, 1 tablespoon of calendula and another one of lemon balm in 1/2 liter of water. After that time, remove from heat, cover and let cool. Take this infusion throughout the day.

Remedy for menstrual colic #2: Pour 2 tablespoons of cinnamon in a cup of water that is boiling. Cover and let stand. Take 3 cups of this infusion daily. It is important that this infusion is very hot (but not burned) for ingestion.

Remedy for menstrual colic #3: Pour 1 tablespoon of licorice and another of chamomile in a cup of water that is boiling. Cover and let stand. Take, still hot (but not burning) to feel the first manifestations of pain.

Remedy for menstrual colic #4; Take a mineral bath. To do this, add 1 cup of sea salt and another of sodium bicarbonate to the bath water. Immerse for 20 minutes. This bath helps to relax the muscles and relieve abdominal pain.

Remedy for menstrual colic #5: Crampbark and red raspberry blend. This is my favorite. I take them in tincture or tea.

The inside of the mouth is lined with a delicate mucus. Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are a type of sore that occur in said mucosa, and they differ from cold sores because they are not caused by the herpes virus. Also, its appearance is different.

They can be very painful and cause discomfort when talking and eating. They appear on the inner side of the cheeks, the inner part of the lips, the base of the gums and the lower and upper part of the tongue, but they even form in the upper part of the mouth and the area near the tonsils.

Wellness Plan for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an uncomfortable autoimmune disorder that causes your skin to overproduce cells and build them into scaly-looking patches across the skin. It is often accompanied by redness and inflammation and can be itchy or painful when a flare-up happens.

Western medicine is not clear about what causes psoriasis. In the word of alternative treatment, it is believed that a weakened immunity, unhealthy gut and poor nutrition can increase the chances of developing or exacerbating this condition.

So, what can you do if you struggle with psoriasis?

Readjusting your diet should be step no 1. Visit your doctor, nutritionist or herbalist (like myself) to help you learn how to change your diet to help improve your condition.

I’ve had a cough for 8 straight weeks! Got a cold 2 months ago and the silly cough stayed and stayed. 8 weeks later, I was freaking out, not knowing what could possibly be causing this crazy cough. So yet again, I paid attention to foods that can be aggravating and creating the wrong internal environment, while using some awesome herbal and home remedies. Within 7 days, the cough was gone!

Check out the video and tips in writing below!

Dietary guidelines:

  • Reduce dairy, white food and sugar. Essentially, anything that cause phlegm!
  • Drink a TON of water

Remedies include:

  1. Gargles of warm water and salt
  2. Eucalyptus essential oil on your chest
  3. Use a steamer or humidifier in the evening
  4. Nasya oil for the nose
  5. Thyme tea
  6. Marshmallow root powder tea

Important Reminder: Any cough that lingers longer than 8 weeks should be revised by a specialist. In my case, I went to my acupuncturist who recommended me some herbs and that helped out as well!

Endometriosis Pain Management

Struggling with endometriosis pain? There’s much you can do. First of, check out the video below for details, then check out the notes below the video.

Here are the foods that you should avoid or favor:

Foods to avoid

  • dairy
  • processed foods high in refined sugars
  • caffeine
  • alcohol

Foods to increase include:

  • green leafy vegetables
  • broccoli
  • celery
  • blueberries
  • ginger
  • chia seeds

Regarding the herbs and natural remedies to try, check these out:

  1. Castor oil

Castor oil has been used for hundreds of years to treat endometriosis. It can be used at the very beginning, when cramping is first felt, to help the body get rid of excess tissues. It’s important that this technique is only used before the menstrual flow, and not during.

Castor oil should be massaged directly into the abdomen. You can also mix it with a few drops of a relaxing essential oil like lavender to help relax the pelvic muscles, and apply it to a warm compress to place on the abdomen.

  1. Turmeric /ginger

Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial to people experiencing endometriosis symptoms. It can also be used to manage endometriosis in the long term. Some research has even found that it has the ability to inhibit endometrial growth.

You can take turmeric capsules, or make turmeric tea by boiling one cup of water and adding a teaspoon of both turmeric and ginger powder. You can also add honey and lemon. Drink this three times daily while experiencing symptoms, and at least once daily when you’re using it for maintenance.

Ginger tea

Some people with endometriosis experience nausea as a result of the condition. Ginger tea is one of the best home remedies for treating nausea, and research has consistently shown that it’s both safe and effective.

You can purchase ginger tea packets at many supermarkets and grocery stores. Just add them to a cup of boiling water and drink two to three times daily when experiencing nausea.

  1. Pelvic massages with Motherwort oil

Massaging the pelvic muscles can help relax them and reduce inflammation, reducing cramping. Using a few drops of high-quality lavender essential oil can help further relax the muscles. Gently massage the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

Pelvic massages should only be used before the menstrual cycle; it may aggravate symptoms if you use it as a treatment during your period.

Treat Sunburn at Home

Sunburn! Can happen at any time in the year and regardless of whether you’re at the beach, at a picnic, climbing Machu Pichu or skiing. They are never fun and can be downright dangerous. What I love about these 5 super easy sunburn remedies is that you’re not only soothing your skin, you’re helping the skin heal and potentially preventing serious consequences in the future.

Here are my top 5 go-to sunburn cures:

1.Potato paste

You will need…
-1 potatoes
-A grater, blender

Directions
Wash and scrub your potatoes thoroughly, and then either grate them over a bowl or cut them up and put them in a blender. There is no need to remove the peels. If you’re using a blender, give them a whirl until they’ve become quite liquid.

Let it sit for 15-20 mins

Pour out the mixture, soak cotton balls thoroughly in it, and apply to sunburn. An easier perhaps more effective method would be to soak gauze and lay it over the burn. If you’re using a grater, grate the potatoes over a bowl and apply the pulp, trying to get as much juice as possible.

2.Cornstarch/baking soda

What you’ll need:

Cornstarch or baking soda
-Cool water

Directions
How much cornstarch or baking soda you need will vary depending on how big of an area you want to cover. Whichever one you are using add cool water-not cold- little by little until it has reached a paste-like consistency. Smear the paste gently over your burn and leave on until the heat or pain has let up some. Rinse off completely.

Let it sit for 15-20 mins

3. Wash with witch hazel

What you’ll need:

-3 tablespoons of witch hazel, approximately
-Cotton balls or a clean soft cloth

Directions
The amount of witch hazel you will need will depend on the area of the burn you want to cover. Pour the necessary amount into a bowl, and soak cotton balls or a clean cloth in the liquid. Dab on just enough to cover the burn-it doesn’t need to be dripping off. Reapply as needed for pain.

Let it sit for 15-20 mins

4. Vinegar

Pure unfiltered apple cider vinegar seems to work the best, and often times proponents of this method say is most effective after a cool or tepid shower.

What you will need…
-1 cup raw apple cider vinegar
-a spray bottle (optional)
-Cotton balls or something similar for application

Directions
Take a shower and before patting dry, spray the burnt area with the raw apple cider vinegar.

Let it dry.

5. Mint & Green tea

What you will need…
-1 quart of boiling water
-5 green tea bags
-5 bags of mint leaf tea

Directions
Steep all bags into the water letting is sit for approximately an hour so you can get all the good stuff out of it.

Strain and then chill.

Apply directly onto the burn with a cotton swab. You can substitute de green tea for black if you don’t have green tea.

Herbs that Help Manage PMS

90% of women report having painful menstrual cramps from time to time. In parts of the world, women use fennel seeds to relieve cramps and pain during menses. In studies done with fennel versus placebo, they worked just as well as over the counter pain drugs and without the side effects.

Fennels seeds also have the added bonus of helping reduce bloat and painful abdominal gas. They’re like tiny 1-2 punches of goodness.

Note: Fennel seeds relax the uterus so you may bleed heavier than normal. Please exercise caution if you have very heavy periods.

On the other hand, ginger is one of the most effective herbs for cramps AND to reduce bleeding. Having ginger tea regularly throughout your period can just do the trick. In studies, ginger seems to appears to be a highly effective treatment for the reduction of menstrual blood loss.

And of course, it is safer than most prescription medication, and with fewer side effects

In combination, these 2 powerhouses may work incredibly well to manage PMS symptoms.

Here’s how I used them:

BENEFITS:
(1) Ginger Root
Effective for cramps
Reduces inflammation
Relieves pain
Reduces bleeding
Helps with anxiety and depression

(2) Fennel Seeds
Reduces gas and bloating
Can increase blood flow
Reduces cramps and discomfort
Anti-inflammatory
Relaxes muscles

Tea Recipe
1-2 inches of ginger root
1 Tbsp of fennel seeds
3-4 cups of water

Boil at low heat for 5 mins. Let cool and drink 1 cup twice a day at least one week prior to your period or when the first symptoms appear.

Natural Herbal Blend for Chronic Pain

Medical and recreational cannabis is all the rage today and for good reason. When it come to treating and managing chronic pain cannabis is considered one of the most effective herbal blends available.

Sadly, cannabis is still not available to many people in the US and other countries due to its status as an illegal drug. So, if you live in an area where cannabis is not available or legal to use, what natural cure alternatives do you have? Here are 4 of my favorite herbal remedies to help with pain, naturally:

Fever Few

A medicinal plant traditionally used for the treatment of fevers, migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, stomach aches, toothaches, insect bites, infertility, and problems with menstruation and labor during childbirth.

Arnica

Arnica is applied to the skin for pain and swelling associated with bruises, aches, and sprains. It is also applied to the skin for insect bites, arthritis, muscle and cartilage pain, chapped lips, and acne.

CA Poppy

Mostly used for nerve pain, various psychiatric conditions, blood vessel problems, sensitivity to weather changes, and sedation.

Also for long term mental and physical tiredness.

Kava Kava

Kava Kava for tension headaches and neuropathic pain

Have you tried any of these? Which ones and how was your experience? Let me know in the comments below.
