Endometriosis Pain Management

Struggling with endometriosis pain? There’s much you can do. First of, check out the video below for details, then check out the notes below the video.

Here are the foods that you should avoid or favor:

Foods to avoid

  • dairy
  • processed foods high in refined sugars
  • caffeine
  • alcohol

Foods to increase include:

  • green leafy vegetables
  • broccoli
  • celery
  • blueberries
  • ginger
  • chia seeds

Regarding the herbs and natural remedies to try, check these out:

  1. Castor oil

Castor oil has been used for hundreds of years to treat endometriosis. It can be used at the very beginning, when cramping is first felt, to help the body get rid of excess tissues. It’s important that this technique is only used before the menstrual flow, and not during.

Castor oil should be massaged directly into the abdomen. You can also mix it with a few drops of a relaxing essential oil like lavender to help relax the pelvic muscles, and apply it to a warm compress to place on the abdomen.

  1. Turmeric /ginger

Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial to people experiencing endometriosis symptoms. It can also be used to manage endometriosis in the long term. Some research has even found that it has the ability to inhibit endometrial growth.

You can take turmeric capsules, or make turmeric tea by boiling one cup of water and adding a teaspoon of both turmeric and ginger powder. You can also add honey and lemon. Drink this three times daily while experiencing symptoms, and at least once daily when you’re using it for maintenance.

Ginger tea

Some people with endometriosis experience nausea as a result of the condition. Ginger tea is one of the best home remedies for treating nausea, and research has consistently shown that it’s both safe and effective.

You can purchase ginger tea packets at many supermarkets and grocery stores. Just add them to a cup of boiling water and drink two to three times daily when experiencing nausea.

  1. Pelvic massages with Motherwort oil

Massaging the pelvic muscles can help relax them and reduce inflammation, reducing cramping. Using a few drops of high-quality lavender essential oil can help further relax the muscles. Gently massage the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

Pelvic massages should only be used before the menstrual cycle; it may aggravate symptoms if you use it as a treatment during your period.

Treat Sunburn at Home

Sunburn! Can happen at any time in the year and regardless of whether you’re at the beach, at a picnic, climbing Machu Pichu or skiing. They are never fun and can be downright dangerous. What I love about these 5 super easy sunburn remedies is that you’re not only soothing your skin, you’re helping the skin heal and potentially preventing serious consequences in the future.

Here are my top 5 go-to sunburn cures:

1.Potato paste

You will need…
-1 potatoes
-A grater, blender

Directions
Wash and scrub your potatoes thoroughly, and then either grate them over a bowl or cut them up and put them in a blender. There is no need to remove the peels. If you’re using a blender, give them a whirl until they’ve become quite liquid.

Let it sit for 15-20 mins

Pour out the mixture, soak cotton balls thoroughly in it, and apply to sunburn. An easier perhaps more effective method would be to soak gauze and lay it over the burn. If you’re using a grater, grate the potatoes over a bowl and apply the pulp, trying to get as much juice as possible.

2.Cornstarch/baking soda

What you’ll need:

Cornstarch or baking soda
-Cool water

Directions
How much cornstarch or baking soda you need will vary depending on how big of an area you want to cover. Whichever one you are using add cool water-not cold- little by little until it has reached a paste-like consistency. Smear the paste gently over your burn and leave on until the heat or pain has let up some. Rinse off completely.

Let it sit for 15-20 mins

3. Wash with witch hazel

What you’ll need:

-3 tablespoons of witch hazel, approximately
-Cotton balls or a clean soft cloth

Directions
The amount of witch hazel you will need will depend on the area of the burn you want to cover. Pour the necessary amount into a bowl, and soak cotton balls or a clean cloth in the liquid. Dab on just enough to cover the burn-it doesn’t need to be dripping off. Reapply as needed for pain.

Let it sit for 15-20 mins

4. Vinegar

Pure unfiltered apple cider vinegar seems to work the best, and often times proponents of this method say is most effective after a cool or tepid shower.

What you will need…
-1 cup raw apple cider vinegar
-a spray bottle (optional)
-Cotton balls or something similar for application

Directions
Take a shower and before patting dry, spray the burnt area with the raw apple cider vinegar.

Let it dry.

5. Mint & Green tea

What you will need…
-1 quart of boiling water
-5 green tea bags
-5 bags of mint leaf tea

Directions
Steep all bags into the water letting is sit for approximately an hour so you can get all the good stuff out of it.

Strain and then chill.

Apply directly onto the burn with a cotton swab. You can substitute de green tea for black if you don’t have green tea.

Better than a XANAX… to help you RELAX & Good Sleep

Your Best Skin Ever with this Eczema Salve

When dealing with eczema and any other inflammatory auto-immune condition, starting with the diet and supplementation could be critical. My clients with eczema are always advised by their doctors to consume anti-inflammatory foods, eliminate dairy to reduce symptoms and take an omega-3 supplement.

You can also follow some lifestyle practices like reducing the amount of baths you take, avoid harsh detergents and beauty products and do a cleanse/detox a few times a year.

As an herbalist, I also recommend a fantastic balm/cream to keep the skin moisturized with anti-eczema and anti-inflammatory properties.

Homemade Eczema Cream

Key Ingredient: Lavender

Lavender is known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Other studies have shown its ability to combat fungal infections by destroying the cells of the fungus and killing it. Lavender also has an acceleratory effect on wound healing.

Key Ingredient: Shea Butter

Shea has been used by women in the African continent for centuries and I personally believe it is the main reason why African women have such incredible-looking, silky, shiny skin (I challenge you to find me an African woman whose skin is not smooth and healthy-looking). It is full of all-natural vitamin A, works as an anti-inflammatory and aids in numerous skin conditions.

How To Make Your Own Eczema Cream

INGREDIENTS:

½ cup raw shea butter

½ cup coconut oil

30 drops of lavender essential oil

8 drops of tea tree essential oil

1 Tbsp of Jojoba oil

1 Tbsp of vitamin E oil

DIRECTIONS:

Using a double boiler or something similar, melt the shea butter and coconut oil until they’re combined and fully liquified.

Once everything has melted, remove from heat and add the lavender, tea tree and jojoba oils.

Mix together with a spoon and let it cool slightly cool until mix begins to thicken, but keep it soft. Do not let it to harden too much.

Transfer to the mason jar or other container. Store at room temperature.

Important Note: Always test in a patch of skin first, to make sure you don’t have a reaction to any of the ingredients.

Once you have tested the product, simply apply once or twice a day over the affected area. Make sure to avoid eye contact.

Pink Eye (Conjuntivitis) Suggestions

Suffering from pink eye?

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis is a rather uncomfortable infection that looks pretty nasty, although it’s fairly harmless. Most of us have had it (or know someone who has) and know how uncomfortable it can be.

The disease can be caused by both a viral and bacterial infection and, while the bacterial infection can be treated with antibiotics, the viral version of the disease cannot (sadly, this is the most common type of pink eye!)

So what to do?

Do not fret: half of all cases of conjunctivitis or pink eye clear up on their own. So, while you might have to deal with this for a little over a week, there are a few herbal remedies you can get to help you feel better and make symptoms more tolerable while you wait for the infection to clear up. Here are five of my favorite herbal blends for pink eye!

Remedy 1

A fennel bulb, in a blender along with a little water. Liquify and paste. Wash eyes with fennel juice.

Remedy 2

Black tea – boil for 5 mins. Wash the eyes with the tea an apply the sachet over closed eyelids.

Remedy 3

Chamomile tea. Soak two small cotton cloths with this tea and place each cloth over the closed eyelids.

Remedy 4

Peel and grate a fresh potato. Then wrap this in a gauze and put it over your eyes.

Remedy 5

Witch hazel. Steep herb and make tea. Soak a gauze and add this compress on affected eyes.

Have you tried any? Will you? Let me know in the comments below! Feel better.

Top 5 Herbs that Help Digestion

In my experience as an herbalist and a patient suffering from fibroids and endometriosis, I’ve found that, creating a balanced environment in your gut can allow your hormonal system to work a bit more efficiently and eventually reduce pain and discomfort until your body returns to a balanced state.

Here are the 5 herbs I’ve used through the years to soothe my GI tract and also help balance my hormonal self.

*Chamomile – very popular and mild. Don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s common and wildly used. Chamomile increases gastric juices, helps you expel gas, reduce painful spasms and reduce inflammation. It is wildly used because it is mild so even people with IBS and other serious gastric conditions can use it.

*Hops (will help you sleep, sedative, nerving relaxant), but it revs up your digestive juices.

*Slippery Elm (Ulnus spp) – is used in lots of OTC’s. Slippery Elm is great for the mouth (soft tissue, canker sores, stomach walls). Awesome to sooth the gut when your hormones are causing LOTS of issues

*Yarrow: Yarrow leaf and flower can be added to food or used in tea. This bitter plant may be helpful in managing blood sugar, which is so important in maintaining digestive health AND regulating thyroid function, which is key in maintaining strong and balanced hormonal health.

*Triphala, an Ayurvedic combination of the fruits amalaki, haritaki and bibhitaki, is the classic herbal remedy for long-term digestive benefit. It tones the intestinal walls, detoxifies the system and promotes evacuation. Triphala has a high tannin content, so in low doses, it treats diarrhea (1 gram per day). In higher doses, it treats constipation in a slow, gentle way, toning the walls of the gut while it works.

Favorite Herbs For Sleeplessness And/Or Low-Level Anxiety

When talking about lack of sleep and and low level anxiety that keeps you up at night, we always want to focus on calming our central nervous system, rather than forcing it to shut down.

On this video, I show you my go to “hacks” and a few herbs (including an awesome,  yet simple remedy) to help your mind and body relax and manage your sleeplessness and low level anxiety:

Ashwagandha

Known as Indian Ginseng, Ashwagandha can increase energy to the body at a cellular level but it can also help you handle stress more effectively, helping you deal with anxiety and high levels of stress. In India it is used as an energy tonic, known to increase memory and brain power.

Get Some Magnesium

Take some magnesium with dinner (about 350 mg) as this calms your central nervous system and helps you relax. Make sure to take it with dinner, not in the morning! I prefer the powder versions, CALM is a great brand.

Massage Your Feet

Massage your feet with oil (sesame or coconut will do) before going to bed. If it’s cold, put some sock on.

My Go-To Herbal Remedy

½ cup of almond milk

½ tsp of honey (or coconut syrup)

1 tsp of aniseed

Warm and drink after dinner (7-8pm) every night

Herbal Tonic for Feminine Health

Regardless of where you are in your life: early 20’s and enjoying singlehood, perhaps ready to conceive, struggling with hormonal issues, have absolutely no sex drive, dealing with pre menopause or menopause, just to name a few, this female tonic herb will help you for sure!

First, here are the ingredients and why they are so amazing:

*Stinging Nettle

This is my most favorite all around fertility herb. Not only does it tone and nourish the uterus, it also promotes strengthening of the kidneys and adrenal glands.  If you are or have ever been a coffee drinker, this herb is for you!

One, two, or even more cups per day of this high mineral tea which is also loaded with chlorophyll (a detoxifier) for several months goes a long way toward preparing a woman’s body for pregnancy and for sustaining the embryo once conception occurs.

*Red Raspberry

Red Raspberry leaves, particularly the wild kind, are very high in calcium.   Like Nettle and Red Clover, Red Raspberry leaves serve as a soothing uterine tonic and hence a very effective fertility herb.

The fertility promoting effects of Red Raspberry are enhanced in combination with other herbs, particularly Red Clover.

*Red Clover

Red clover is an excellent fertility herb primarily due to the high amounts of calcium and magnesium. These two minerals are believed to be of high importance in affecting a woman’s ability to conceive.

Red clover contains every single trace element needed by the glandular system.   As such, this alkalizing herb is probably the single most effective plant used for balancing of the hormones needed for conception to take place.    Balancing the body acid/alkaline PH, and thereby, the uterus PH, goes a long way toward favoring conception.

Now there’s the awesome infusion:

Equal parts of:

  • Red Clover
  • Red Raspberries
  • Nettles

Combine in about 24 ounces or warm to hot water (not boiling hot, please) and steep overnight or during the day. Drink 1-2 cups a day and leave the rest in the fridge, drinking it daily or at least every other day.

Try it, you won’t regret it. Give it a go and let me know in the comments below!

“Magic” Herb that kills STRESS + Ashwagandha

There’s a new herbal superstar in town! I’ve been using it for about 3 years and recommending it to clients with outstanding results. Why do I love it? Because it’s one of the most effective stress relieving substances I’ve ever tried. And it’s legal!

This little marble is called Ashwagandha and the people in India and those in the West who follow Ayurveda, have known about its amazing properties for decades.

It also happens to be an all-around health tonic (meaning, it helps your entire system, not just your stress levels). Learn more about it and get some of the herb here!

If you’re interested in trying this marvel herb, check out the ones from Lost Empire Herbs! I love it in tincture form and this company offers a truly high quality one!

The Power Of Words

Every day for a month I said negative and demeaning words to what I called the “bad apple”. Things like “you’re nasty, fat and ugly. You’re stupid and incapable. You can’t do anything right. Why do you even try! You suck and I hate you”.

The other half, the “good apple” heard beautiful words of encouragement. I told her things like: “you are so smart, amazing, sweet and gentle. You are amazing and I am in awe of you, you are the best, I love you”. The first 7-10 days not much was happening… but then things started to change.
